My Depo Provera Story + Conceiving
Months ago and up until a few days ago I went through a panic where I wanted to detox my body. I had been on the Depo Provera shot for 16 months as of April of this year and wanted to make sure that the drug was completely out of my system. Originally I was on Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo Pills to minimize cramping during my cycles, I had no problems with them just dizzy spells in the morning. I decided to take them later in the day and everything was fine. When I went off to college, I wasn’t able to always refill on time and it became a problem. I had heard a girl say once in High School that the Depo shot will make you thick, basically it’ll make you gain weight. That appealed to me because I have been thin all of my life and I wasn’t able to gain weight if my life depended on it. When I requested the Depo shot, my Gyn was very lax about prescribing the drug to me. She warned me that I could only stay on Depo for 2 years because it could make my bones weak and she suggested that I take calcium and drink milk. She didn’t tell me that taking Depo Provera could lead to infertility and other complications. I had to find that out on my own while curiously searching the web. The Depo Provera horror stories are just never-ending. After reading so many of them I was afraid that I would have complications trying to conceive because of this drug.
Starting a family early is so important to Greg and I so you can see why I panicked. I bought a detox kit which is a colon cleanse as well as a kidney cleanse. I also purchased Vitex, and Soy Isoflavones, none of which I used! Some of the vitamins read that pregnant women should not take them and at the time the Depo shot had my menstrual cycle on PAUSE. While on Depo I bled for months at a time, once I stopped getting the shots, I stopped bleeding all together. To be on the safe side, I didn’t take any of the vitamins. Since it’s said that Depo can take up to 6 months or more to leave the body I began to believe that I would be infertile for a very long time. I tried to work up the courage to see a doctor about getting my cycles restarted. Some doctors will gladly help and then others will try to tell you that you’re too young to be wanting to do x, y, and z so I didn’t want to deal with that. I started noticing some changes in my body which I thought were side effects from coming off of Depo. Extreme hunger pains, nausea, dizziness, and loss of energy in September. I didn’t think much of those symptoms because I read that many have those symptoms coming off of Depo. I figured that us having a baby is something that we want more than anything in the world, it’s such an exciting thing, and it just wouldn’t happen to us. The symptoms didn’t last long but at the same time I treated my body as if there was a life inside of me. Then, the “girls” started getting plumper, my stomach got a little pudge, I grew some love handles. I thought What’s going on? Hmm I’m loving the girls but my stomach’s looking a little out of shape, must be the Depo, but could I be pregnant? I wanted to take a home pregnancy test but read that in a lot of cases whether pregnant or not, with Depo being in the system the test would read negative, so I decided that I would just go to the Gyn for a blood test, those don’t lie. I told myself that after the cruise I’ll get it done. On the cruise I was running to the bathroom every 2 seconds, my stomach had gotten pudgier so Greg ask me to just take a test from the store. I still didn’t want to because I had a feeling it wouldn’t work. When we got home from the cruise we picked up a value pack of 2 Answer brand pregnancy tests. The instructions tell you to wait 3 minutes for results. In less than 30 SECONDS…
I feel like we have experienced a miracle. We go get an “official” pregnancy test as well as an ultrasound on the 12th, I can’t wait! I wanted to wait until the doctor visit was over for the announcement so that we know that everything is fine but I cannot hold it in anymore! Please wish us luck at the doctor! I spilled the beans to my mother almost instantly and she’s super excited. She told me that she already knew, she saw my pudge, plus I didn’t drink on the cruise. She said I did good, lol. I thought she was going to take the news differently, *phew*. Greg still has to tell his mother, she’s going to have a midlife crisis! She’ll be 39 on the 10th. She’ll just have to be one hot mom grandma, lol.
Sophistishe.Org may (in hopes that the dr. visit goes well) officially be a mommy blog. Don’t worry, most of the baby stuff will be kept on another domain as soon as Greg and I get it up and running. It’s been sitting since April.
I’m going to try to stay calm until the 12th, I think I’m doing a good job

I saw your twitter the other day and I’m like Sheena’s pregnant. I’m so happy for you! I hope everything goes well at the doctor. Congrats!!!
Something similar happened to Christina Aguilera. She was going off of birth control during her tour because she heard that it takes a while to get your body back to normal and she ended up getting pregnant on the last leg of her tour. I guess she’s not the only power egg and super sperm running around here, lol.
Congratulations!!! I’m excited for you and Greg. All that I’ll say is it’s an experience you will never forget.
Ditto to what Chrissy said; I saw the piece and it pretty much said what you typed about bc. I experienced none of that since I had never taken them to begin with. And now I see why you didn’thave a birthday drink. I’ll have two for you then; 1 for your birthday and one for the baby!
Total ditto to what the other two said. I just knew with your hints of being tired and drinking virgin drinks…that’s so exciting! Congrats to you and Greg! Starting a family young is important to me as well, so I’m with you there!
CONGRATS!!!!!
get ready for a whirlwind of a time…with the pregnancy and when baby comes
That is wonderful news. Congrats and hope all goes well!!
Aw! That is awesome news!! Congrats to you both!
Like many other ladies, I’ve had my fair share of nightmare stories with Depo. I’m glad it didn’t impede on your ability to have a baby. After I had my daughter, I got on Depo and it caused so many problems in such a short amount of time, that I’m hoping that if we try for another one, it didn’t ruin our chances.
Good luck at the doctor’s! Looking forward to all of your baby related posts now.
I’m sooo happy for you and Greg. I’m a new mommy myself so I know how excited you guys are.
I AM SOOOOOOOOOO EXCITED FOR YOU! Well, you already knew this! I’m off to BRAG about it on my blog. I’m stealing a photo of you and Greg to go along with my post.
Grandma (age 39) and her first midlife crisis!

Wow this is so great, congratulations. Good luck on your appointment.
Congrats - I did the Depro shot too and Have to very healthy girls now, and the extra weight that the shot gave me ( I gained like fifty lbs before I said enough was enough ther wasn’t a good time worth all that.)
Nothing wrong with having a mom blog - I got one too, that suprisingly as I type this I now isn’t always about my girls - go figure!
My mom refuses to be called Grandma- she goes by GiGi. You MIL will figure out what works for her too!
AS I said I can’t wait to add you to me reader and follow along in your story!
I’m in Missouri so we aren’t terribly far apart either.

That is a great story with a very happy ending. Congratulations!
Congrats… Hopefully the 12th dr appointment confirms it.. Great news so excited to hear more…
Sheena, congratulations to you both!! I am so happy for you. I am also glad to see that someone else felt the need to purchase the value pack just to be extra sure. I look forward to all your updates on the pregnancy. I have 4 months to go before I have my baby boy so I am preparing the best I can. I sincerely wish you all the best and may God Bless you all!! Sheliza
Congratulations! How exciting
I too used the Answer brand. It gave me a positive result before my missed menstral. I’d say it’s pretty reliable. Good Luck on the 12th
BTW: Found you by way of Tanyetta.
Congratulations !!!! I also was pregnant when my 21st birthday came, and couldn’t drink a thing.
My son’s Grandma was also 39 at the time and she refused to be called Grandma. She felt she was too young for that title. So to make her’s hip she has my son calling her G-G.
I am so excited for you! Tons of luck Sheena! Wow… I am just so happy for you!
Woo hoo!
Congrats!
A side note: I have gotten pregnant on every different type of birth control I’ve tried, so now I always test even if I don’t think it’s likely. I’ve gotten pregnant on bc pills, norplant, and others. LOL Hopefully what I’ve got now will work longer than the others because I don’t want to be a mommy 2 lots more.
OMG, Sheena…Congratulations!!! I totally wasn’t expecting *this* news! I just stopped by to see all about your trip. lol. I’m sure you and Greg will be WONDERFUL parents. *sends positive vibes for good things to happen at the doctor*
